Brighton summers are short but they do not mess around. When the first real heat wave hits in late June, air conditioners that limped through last season start dropping, and everyone calls at once. Why is my AC freezing up?
Finding your refrigerant line wearing a sleeve of ice in July is confusing. Ice forms when the evaporator coil gets colder than it should, and that happens for two main reasons.
Restricted airflow. The coil needs a steady stream of warm house air across it. A packed filter, closed vents, a crushed flex duct, or a failing blower slows that stream, coil temperature crashes, humidity freezes to it, and the ice further blocks airflow in a feedback loop until the whole coil is a block. This is the cause more than half the time and the fix can be as simple as a filter.
Low refrigerant. A leak drops the pressure in the coil, which drops its temperature below freezing. Same ice, different cause, and no filter change will fix it. Refrigerant does not get used up, so a low system always means a leak somewhere. Anyone who tops off your refrigerant without at least discussing a leak search is renting you a working AC by the month.
What to do right now: switch cooling off at the thermostat but leave the fan ON. That thaws the coil in a few hours without the flooding a heat gun can cause. Change the filter. Run cooling again. If ice comes back within days, book a visit and we will find the leak or airflow fault properly.
What an AC repair visit looks like
We check the whole refrigeration circuit, the dead part included. Pressures and superheat or subcooling to judge the charge, capacitor values under load, amp draws on the compressor and fan motors, condensate drainage, and airflow at the coil.
